Calibrating a hygrometer: How to correctly measure humidity in a humidor

Why your hygrometer is probably giving a false reading

Many cigar enthusiasts blindly rely on the hygrometer – and then wonder about:

-> dry cigars despite "70%"

-> poor combustion

-> fluctuating values

The reason: Many hygrometers are not accurately calibrated at the factory.
Even inexpensive models can have a deviation of 5–10% .

That makes a huge difference when it comes to cigars.

Step 1: Position the hygrometer correctly

A common mistake: The hygrometer is hung at the very top or directly next to the humidifier.

Better:
centered in the humidor
✅ not directly at the humidification source
✅ not directly on the wall surface

Because the humidity is not exactly the same everywhere.

Step 2: Calibrate the hygrometer (simple & proven)

The classic method is the so-called "salt test".

✅ Here's how:

1. Take a small container or zip-top bag

2. Add a teaspoon of salt.

3. Moisten the salt minimally (it should be damp, not liquid)

4. Add the hygrometer.

5. Seal everything airtight.

6. Wait approximately 6–8 hours.

The humidity in this environment should be 75% .

👉 If your hygrometer shows, for example, 70%, then you know:
It has a -5% deviation.

Many hygrometers can be adjusted directly afterwards – others cannot, in which case you have to calculate it in your head.

Step 3: Don't check values every minute

Humidor values fluctuate slightly, especially after opening.

✅ Useful: Check briefly once a day or every few days
❌ pointless: constantly readjusting and driving yourself crazy

Stability comes from routine, not stress.

Digital vs. analog hygrometers – which is better?

Digital hygrometers

✅ usually more accurate
✅ easier to read
✅ often with temperature display

Analog hygrometers

✅ They look classic
✅ appear high-quality
❌ are often less accurate if not done well

Ideally: a good digital hygrometer for accuracy + optionally an analog one for design.

Conclusion: Humidor storage without a calibrated hygrometer is a gamble.

If you really want to store cigars correctly, a calibrated hygrometer is essential.

Because only with genuine values can you:
✅ readjust cleanly
✅ Avoid mold
✅ Keep aroma stable
✅ Enjoy cigars perfectly
